Numbers have direction in terms of positive and negative values, indicating whether they represent a quantity above or below a defined reference point, usually zero. Positive numbers are greater than zero, while negative numbers are less than zero.
Positive Numbers:
These indicate a value greater than zero. They are often associated with gains, credits, or increases. For example, +50 rands means you have 50 rands.
Positive Balance: If you have R200 in your account, your balance is +R200. This means you have 200 rands available.
Negative Numbers:
These indicate a value less than zero. They are often associated with losses, debits, or decreases. For example, -30 rands means you owe 30 rands.
Negative Balance: If you have an overdraft of R100, your balance is -R100. This means you owe the bank 100 rands.

Number Line
A number line can help visualize this concept:
-100Â -50Â Â Â Â 0Â Â Â Â +50Â +100
  |—–|—–|—–|—–|—–|
- To the right of zero are positive numbers (e.g., +50, +100).
- To the left of zero are negative numbers (e.g., -50, -100).
Lets make another example using a bank account transaction
Transaction | Amount | Balance |
Initial Balance | R100 | +R100 |
Deposit | R50 | +R150 |
Withdrawal | R200 | -R50 |
Deposit | R100 | +R50 |
Initial Balance: +R100
- Deposit R50: +R100 + R50 = +R150
- Withdrawal R200: +R150 – R200 = -R50
- Deposit R100: -R50 + R100 = +R50
In this example:
- Positive balances (+R150, +R50) show how much money is available.
- Negative balance (-R50) shows the amount owed.
Understanding the direction of numbers helps in managing finances, determining profit or loss, and comprehending various financial scenarios.
