Numbers are grouped in threes from right to left starting at the comma to make them easier to read and understand. Each group of three digits represents a different magnitude or “place value,” which helps in quickly identifying the scale of the number. These groups are named as follows: Ones, Thousands, Millions, Billions, etc. Each group contains three digits representing the Hundreds, Tens, and Units places (HTU).
1. Whole numbers
In the table below, the number is 210,987,654,321. It is broken down as follows:
Group Name | Hundreds | Tens | Units |
Ones | 3 | 2 | 1 |
Thousands | 6 | 5 | 4 |
Millions | 9 | 8 | 7 |
Billions | 2 | 1 | 0 |
- Ones: 321 (Hundreds: 3, Tens: 2, Units: 1)
- Thousands: 654 (Hundreds: 6, Tens: 5, Units: 4)
- Millions: 987 (Hundreds: 9, Tens: 8, Units: 7)
- Billions: 210 (Hundreds: 2, Tens: 1, Units: 0)
Each group of three digits (from right to left) is separated by a comma for readability. The names of these groups help quickly understand the magnitude of the number.

2. Fractions
When we write decimal numbers, we use a comma or a decimal point to separate the whole number part from the fractional part. The digits to the right of the decimal point represent parts of a whole, and they decrease in value as you move further to the right.
For example, in the number 0.456:
- 4 is in the tenths place 0.4 or
- 5 is in the hundredths place 0.05 or
- 6 is in the thousandths place 0.006 or
Place Value | Tenths (10ths) | Hundredths (100ths) |
Thousandths (1000ths)
|
Digit | 4 | 5 | 6 |
